SUMMARY:Rewriting the Story of Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Place: SoCentral (Sentralen\, 5 Floor) – Oslo\, Norway \n\n\n\nFollow the link to sign up: https://www.addevent.com/event/lu26819255 \n\n\n\nAs democracy is backsliding and losing support around the world\, what should we do? Many institutions are rushing to “defend democracy.” But when most people are frustrated with the current system\, we need to go beyond defending that system. To build support for democracy\, we need to improve how democracy works and how we talk about democracy. \n\n\n\nJoin Josh Lerner and Greta Ríos\, Co-Executive Directors of People Powered\, for a deep dive into global efforts to transform democracy and the stories that we tell about it. \n\n\n\nPeople Powered is a global hub for participatory democracy\, dedicated to expanding people’s power to make government decisions. It brings together 300 leading organizations and practitioners to build shared resources\, programs\, and community for participatory democracy. \n\n\n\nWe Need New Democracy Narratives \n\n\n\nWhile building a more participatory democracy\, People Powered is also coordinating a new global Democracy Narratives Campaign\, to shift how we communicate. Dominant narratives frame democracy narrowly around elections\, and this is undermining public support \n\n\n\nThe campaign brings together more than 30 international organizations\, research institutions\, and funders to compile\, develop\, and apply compelling narratives that increase support for and engagement in democracy. \n\n\n\nJoin us to learn about these global efforts to rewrite the story of democracy\, and learn how you can get involved. Also joining the conversation: \n\n\n\n➡️ Josh Lerner and Greta Ríos\, People Powered➡️ Colombina Schaeffer\, Executive Director\, Ciudadania Inteligente (Chile & Latin America)➡️ Marie Harbo Dahle\, Partner\, SoCentral➡️ Tyler Dale Hauger\, Senior Advisor\, Karibu Foundation➡️ Tessa Hartman\, Facilitator\, Pådriv \n\n\n\nCo-hosted by People Powered\, SoCentral members Karibu Foundation and Pådriv\, and SoCentral

SUMMARY:Digital Activism Workshop
DESCRIPTION:📣The struggle for social justice is no longer just in the streets\, it must also be present in digital spaces. \n💻 Join us for a hybrid workshop (digital + physical at DOGA in Oslo) – led by activists from the Global South – that aims to equip activists with tools and concepts required to successfully execute digital activism campaigns. The workshop will cover concrete tools for creating\, executing\, adjusting\, and measuring collective digital activism campaigns that aid real social changes. \n📱 The workshop arrives at a time in which civil society actors have to adjust (both short-term but also long-term) to restrictions of the civic space brought by COVID-19. Demonstrations\, assemblies\, and even freedom of movement will be affected for a long time.  As this accelerates the adoption and naturalization of online public discussions and decision-making\, there is a need for a new wave of digital activists who are ready to face the unexpected consequences of the economic and social crisis already brewing\, ready to strengthen civil society as a whole\, and who are prepared to mobilize to channel unrest in ways that are effective and do not put populations at risk. \nThis workshop is created in solidarity with those with unequal access to digital tools during these changing times – and will be anchored through the lens of the experiences from the global South (specifically the experiences in Latin America). \nThis workshop will be a condensed version of the “Latin American School of Digital Activism\,” which was recently conducted by Fundación Ciudadano Inteligente (Smart Citizen Foundation – Santiago\, Chile) across Latin America as part of their work with their network of activists.  The workshop will be hosted by Fundación Ciudadano Inteligente (Chile) and the Karibu Foundation (Norway). \nRegister your interest in digital participation here:   https://www.karibu.no/news/2021/10/digital-activism-workshop/ \nThe workshop is part of the program for the 2021 Norwegian Social Forum

SUMMARY:Seminar: Shrinking Space for Civil Society and Human Rights Defenders
DESCRIPTION:Human rights defenders\, environmentalists\, community leaders and student activists around the world are subjected to persecution\, violence\, surveillance\, and criminalization. This is not new\, but there is growing concern that social movements and civil society’s room for action\, both internationally and locally\, is getting smaller. In other words\, the room is closing and the space is shrinking. \nWe have gathered activists from different parts of the world and representatives from international organizations to illustrate this\,from both global and local levels. What experiences do activists from different parts of the world have? How does one continue to work despite oppression? And how can activists\, civil society representatives and human rights activists from different parts of the world work together to create conditions that preserve and extend the room for action for themselves and others? \nWith: Tetet Nera-Lauron\, (Coordintor for Peoples’ Movement on Climate Change)\, Carlos Fernandez (Inter-Church Justice and Peace Commission)\, Pablo Neri from Pará\, Brasil (MST)\, Lindah Chido (Students at risk) \nSeminar hosted by: Peace Brigades International\, Karibu\, LAG\, SAIH \nThe seminar is part of the program for the 2018 Globalization Conference / Norwegian Social Forum in Oslo\, and you will need a ticket to the conference to attend. Tickets are available now\, both in the form of a conference pass or day pass.
